About Us
This page provides a brief overview of the history of Hyde Heath Village Shop, which has now been running for 14 years.
The shop started in January 2001 when Mr and Mrs Munnoch announced the closure of the original village shop and Post Office to be effective at the end of March that year. The current shop originally started out as a portacabin as a result of a campaign for a village shop by residents. The portacabin was in use for 2 years and 2 months while the current shop was developed as an extension of the village hall. The new village shop started trading on the 2nd of June 2003. It was officially opened on the 14th June by Councillor Francis Robinson with MP Cheryl Gillan in attendance.
In July 2005 Hyde Heath Village Shop became the first business in the Chiltern area to be issued with one of the new style premises licenses for the sale of alcohol.
In April 2006 the shop was recognised in the Buckinghamshire Ambassador's award as a runner up in the social enterprise section. The Buckinghamshire Ambassadors scheme was launched in October 2004 and is coordinated by Buckinghamshire County Council to bring together key people from all walks of life to raise the profile of Buckinghamshire and to promote economic growth in the country.
On August 23rd 2007 BBC Three Counties Radio visited the shop to record a piece titled 'How We Did It'. Presenter Justin Deeley interviewed Chris Sargeant, Wendy Axe and Sylvia Brown while customers came and went with business as usual. It was broadcast on August 26th.
Ray Challinor, chairman & driving force in setting up our Village Shop in 2001 retired from the committee at the shop AGM on Wednesday April 30th 2008. Ruth Coulton & Chris Sargeant presented him with an antique map of Bucks as a token of appreciation from the committee for his tremendous service to the village.
The shop has more recently been extended forward in 2014 to become level with the village hall allowing the forecourt to be redesigned to become more accessible. Along with this came a new service we could offer; a coffee machine with a range of drinks and a microwave to heat up purchases. The project started in August and ended in November 2014 following a break-in in February.
Over the years we have supported many charity events, such as holding faires to raise money for Children in Need and have even been visited by Pudsey Bear and Mary Berry!
